Infiniminer

That’s right boys and girls – Infiniminer is now available! To play, you’ll need the installer below, the XNA 3.0 runtime (linked below), and maybe the .NET 2.0 runtime (linked below, although you probably have it).

Download Infiniminer v1.5 [1.45 MB]
Download XNA 3.0 Runtime
Download .NET 2.0 Runtime

There’s a README with some basic information, although you can find everything there is to know by holding F1 while in-game. Keep in mind that this is a networked multiplayer game, so you won’t have a lot of fun playing it by yourself.

Make sure you configure your client (name, resolution, etc) by using the “Edit Client Configuration” shortcut, which can be found under the Zachtronics Industries folder in your Start Menu after installation.

Thanks go out to Chris Gengler (tayrtahn@gmail.com) for helping with the artwork.

The official IRC channel for Infiniminer is #infiniminer on Freenode. You can easily join by using this java IRC client, which will take you automatically to the channel.

Ummmmm…I just got an error trying to launch the game.
    It reads:
    “An unexpected error occurred.
    at Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Audio.SoundEffect.AllocateFormatAndData(Byte[] format, Byte[] data)…
And a long ugly traceback follows. This happens whether I have a server running locally on my machine or not. I have the XNA Runtime installed, and I’m using .Net Framework 3.5.

For those who don’t want to poke around in the IRC channel, I’ll be hosting a super-casual game for most of today. The victory condition is absurdly high, so just play around and have fun.
To connect, join the Hamachi network "infiniminer" (pass: infiniminer). Then use the game’s direct connect feature to connect to 5.241.2.159
    Have fun!

Please rebuild the whole game(client+server) setting the Solution Platform to x86 , as for example my OS (Vista x64) cannot run the server because XNA comes only in 32bit version and when the server tries to load it on to the jitted x64 version of your game it crashes as you can’t mix 32bit and 64bit assemblies.

I really want to play this game, but its not working whatever I do. I installed the XNA runtime, and still isnt working. I tried to install .NET 2.0 but it seems I already have it or a newer version so it didnt install, and still not working. Each time I try to open the client, it gives me an error with a large list of variables and functions (a traceback maybe?), and then I have to use task manager to manually end the infiniminer process. I’ve got Windows XP, anyone have any idea what is going wrong?

  27. May 1, 2009 at 4:48 pm | Permalink

Zach, there is NO 64bit version of XNA, its build for X86 solely. Thats why all games using XNA or XNA libraries HAVE to be built for x86 also in order to be able to run on x64 systems.

  28. May 1, 2009 at 4:51 pm | Permalink

    Sorry for double post.
I have recompiled the server(used Reflector to dump it and recompiled with VS) so it works on my end, but you HAVE to build it for x86 and update the installer so other people don’t have to hack the game aswell in order to work 🙂

I thought of some things I would like to see in future versions.
    -More block types
-Some sort of editor for blocks so you can make custom blocks
-More server options like amount of lava at start, etc.
-Fix the teleporter. It warps you high above the ground then you die when you fall

Well, Zach, it works on one computer, but two others are getting two different (fatal) errors.
One computer is giving me “An unexpected error has occured.” This happens when I try to run the client. As far as I can tell, this is the same error that cyberjacob got.
The other is giving me “Both a valid vertex shader and pixel shader (or valid effect) must be set on the device before any draw operations may be performed.” This happens while the client is running. I connect to the server, choose my team, and choose my class. But when it tries to draw the map, this pops up.
When either of these happens, the process never actually ends. The window simply vanishes and leaves the process running. I can email you the stack traces if you want me to. Also, as far as I can tell, .NET 3.5 isn’t what’s causing the problems because when I was able to play the other day, I was on a computer with .NET 3.5.

Hey guys, this is something Zach posted on PTTG’s forum. It is the formatting of the save files, for those who are interested. I have already asked him which block is actually block #1, but that was two minutes ago, so I expect he’ll answer sometime in the next 12 hours or so.
Save files consist of numeric pairs, one for each ‘block’ in the map, separated by newlines. These pairs are of the form “X,Y”, where X denotes the type of block and Y the team it belongs to. Here are the possible X values:
    0 – empty
    1 – empty dirt
    2 – ore
    3 – gold
    4 – diamond
    5 – stone
    6 – red spawn
    7 – blue spawn
    8 – ladder
    9 – explosive block
    10 – jump block
    11 – teleporter
    12 – shock block
    13 – red bank
    14 – blue bank
    15 – red solid
    16 – blue solid
    17 – steel
    18 – ‘dig here!’
    19 – lava
    20 – red ff
    21 – blue ff
    And the possible Y values:
    0 – neutral
    1 – red
    2 – blue
    Some more tidbits:
(This one is paraphrased a little bit)
    – The team control tag is what allows engineers to destroy a block. It is why a Red engineer can (for example) both create and destroy blue AND red force fields, as long as he or someone else on the Red team created them in the first place.
    – Red and blue bank blocks may only be used by members of their respective teams regardless of what the team flag is set to.
    – It is possible to create more than one spawn, though it appears that only the last one appearing in the map description is used by the game. Unused spawn blocks may still be used by players to change their class, however.

Dromer: No. XNA uses the programmable pipeline as the only way to do transforms, so that’s really not an option. The game is pretty demanding, though, so even if you could get it to run I doubt you’d get even acceptable performance, let alone a hearty framerate.
Poltifar: I found records of people having this problem online but as far as I know it’s an open issue with XNA 3.0 that the XNA team is having a hard time reproducing. Try using the following installer and let me know if it fixes your problem:

  92. May 4, 2009 at 5:43 pm | Permalink

You know, the server console needs some more commands, particularly a mute and kick. Maybe some abilities like bonus ore or money, and/or a kill command for just zapping players.
Maybe even something like "destroy all TNT" or all team-related blocks.
Also, an observer mode would be great too.

  93. May 4, 2009 at 5:53 pm | Permalink

    PS:
Make TNT less powerful and cheaper.
Make some way to get rid of it if you die before setting it off or if the player who placed it quits.
It would be a lot more useful if it just blasted the 26 adjacent blocks rather than 225 at a time.
    Just a thought.

  96. May 4, 2009 at 7:00 pm | Permalink

Tell is where you send a message to one specific player. It’s sometimes more convenient than saying something to the whole team.
    Here’s annother couple:
-Log to a file (store the player action logs that the server generates to a text file)
    -time-stamp log events.

Great game, and I’ve had a lot of fun playing it thus far!
A few criticisms and comments from a fellow game-developer: The gameplay is slow and methodical, which contradicts the hurried "gold rush" goal you’ve set up. Also, for all the cool traps and effects and whatnot that you’ve created, these often fall by the wayside unless people are just building for the sake of building. Defenses, traps, and structures at present, are largely of little use to the core game, save for in sandbox construction (which the features serve well for).
To make defenses more important, I could see opposing teams being able to "rob" your constructed Ore Banks, which would make defenses more important.
Also, am I the only one who could see this concept being adapted to a sort of First-Person Shooter / Strategy Game Hybrid? Players actively gathering Resources, building bases and defenses (turrets and such), and attacking opponent bases and supply lines?

Placed 3 boxes, but only two exploded and one stayed, Detonator not working after that. Maybe the server wasn’t updated, I don’t know.
Anyway, you should be able to link Teleporters (as of now, they just spawn you at the top of the level – no matter if there is ground or not) and detonate Lava or at least drain it properly off the Map.

A Sabateur class could serve as a combination of the Sapper class, but with Ore-Stealing abilities, if it is to be class-related. There are likely other solutions to creating strife between players, but at present it doesn’t create a lot of competitiveness between teams, and things tend to peter out.

How about the Thief gets the ability to steal from the enemy bank, and a pulse gun that knocks other players a tile or two over- sending them into traps and over edges, but easy enough to protect yourself from by dodging or finding a secure location. Duels could be very interesting.

Getting closer to being able to create castles and such without having to go into the game and die a lot. Just have to be able to think with a Z-axis, and count the blocks that get skipped in the savefiles.
Shifting gears: I also think that the teleporters need to be linked. Otherwise, there isn’t much point to them, and they aren’t a guaranteed kill. And they’re more expensive than shcok blocks (though not as cool either).

I was working on it. I hadn’t gotten way into it yet, because I was doing it on my lunch break. I will be able to confirm that in the next couple of days.
Also, the world is actually a 62x62x62 cube. There is a one-block face missing from each side of the cube. You can set these however you want to in the save file, but they will not get drawn. The ywill remain empty.

The concept of the teleporter’s deadliness is to balance its ability to rapidly move a player loaded with loot to the surface. Reliable placement would remove the need for players to traverse the hazards of the world (natural or player-made).
Though I agree that it causes more deaths than successful loot deliveries. But where’s the middle ground? Something to think about, I guess.

Well, it took a lot less time than I expected it to. I got a little free time all of a sudden (and no, I am not fired).
*The first block to actually be drawn is at line 4162 (64*64 for empty face, +64 for empty row, +1 for empty block). From there, it goes horizontally in one direction.
*When it reaches the end of the row, it moves vertically by one block and draws another horizontal row, starting at line 4225 (64*64 for empty face, +64 for empty row, +64 for first row actually drawn, +1 for empty block). Once it has drawn all of the rows it can for a vertical face, it moves in the "other" horizontal direction and proceeds to drawn the second vertical face.
*The second face drawn starts at line 8257 (64*64 for empty face, +(64*64) for first face actually drawn, +64 for empty row, +1 for empty block).
*If you are standing on the first block placed and looking towards the area where the rest of the map will be, the second block placed will be to your right. The first block of the second row will be where you are standing. The first block of the second face will be to your left. (If that’s too hard to figure out, just put a spawn at line 4162, and 3 blocks of different types at lines 4163, 4225, and 8257. I think. No time to check right now. Break time is over.)
Keep in mind that, even though they aren’t actually drawn, the game still sees the one-block-thick perimeter of the cube. It simply draws it as empty squares.
*AND* I just realized that I can use my Legos to build bases before I start putting them in the computer. It will make things SO much easier when it comes to visualizing things.

Actually, PTTG, the ore factor isn’t the percentage of ore blocks on the map. I had a server set at 100 before, and it still had plenty of dirt blocks. I think it’s a ratio of [ore factor] ore blocks for every 100 dirt blocks, or something like that. Factor 100 still gives quite a bit of ore, though. (If I’m right about the ratio, it could theoretically give over 75,000 ore blocks, after factoring for caverns and such.)

Hamachi creates a simulated network. When you are connected, it is like you are in a private network with anyone else currently connected to that Hamachi network. If you use your normal IP (usually is something like 192.168.x.x), it will only work for other people in your REAL network.

They were hunting like crazy, and i kept trying to use both my prospector and the miner job quickly, just throwing blue force fields around like crazy since i couldnt build a ore bank. Come a new friend, he switches to miner and we make a quick dash through the map, me pinging him whenever i found Diamond close by. needless to say both teams of 2 players were on a race and we won by a really close margin (we even go to the point that one of the enemy players tried to sabotage us with tnt.. was funny as heck)

Jigs: To save a map, just type “save [filename]” w/ no quotes. Replace [filename] with whatever you want to call the map, and just for consistency, make sure you put the .lvl extension on the file. All of the autosaves end in .lvl, so it’s just nice to be able to tell that it’s a saved level, and not just some file.
Also, the save command only saves the block config. It DOES NOT save team ore amounts or team money amounts. This can be very useful though, since you can just keep playing on the same map over and over and over, building onto what you built last time through.

Hi. First of all, I’d like to say that this game is great! I’ve played for several hours now, and I can’t get enough of it!
Next, I’d like to point out a bug. Sometimes, my game crashes with this error: http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/9815/infinierror.png
What is this? I’ve installed the XNA and .NET frameworks correctly. Is this a problem with my PC or a bug yet to be fixed?
Another thing, what is the player limit of a server? Is it unlimited or not? So far we’ve managed to play in a 6v6 server.
    Lastly, a few suggestions:
    -ping meter
-more customization options (MOTD, mapsize, other game modes, new abilities/items)
-character class balance (make building options for classes other than engineer even more limited, etc)
-work out the bugs (of course, you’re doing that right now. 🙂 )
Anyway, thanks again for this great game! I look forward to an update!

strongbad: Right now, I’m pretty sure that game size is limited by the Hamachi networks most of us are using. They are limited to 16 people each, unless we pay, but we can put the host onto all the networks and just make sure that each non-host only gets on one network. As far as I know, the player limit is determined by how laggy the server’s computer gets when a lot of people connect to it, but I’m not sure. Zach?

Thanks for the reply, compsciguy. I play on a commercial Hamachi server, so if enough people are online, maybe we can try to see how many players we can fit in a game.
Sometimes, though, the server crashes. Everyone gets the error I posted earlier at the same time (including the host, not sure though, will have to verify). The server remains up and the same, and is rejoinable immediately. Happened a lot of times though. Gets annoying.
I’m going to try out Infinifrag next. This might be worth playing too. 🙂

strongbad: Are you using v1.22 (the latest)? The earlier versions had a bug where, if you fell far enough that hitting the ground would kill you, and you landed in lava, the game would crash on everybody, except the server, because it couldn’t figure out whether to kill you with gravity or lava.

    Pretty neat game.
Except.. After several games, I found there was no reason at all to build anything. 1-2 prospectors and 1-2 miners with a sapper to back them up can finish the game without the need to build anything at all. The Engineer idea is awesome, and in fact I have played quite a few sandbox games for building, but I see no reason to build a base when it’s so easy to sap it, and everything else around it.
If you come across a small wall or forcefield, you can just dig around it. I also don’t understand how you could lure an enemy into a trap like the shockblock unless it would be equally deadly to teammates.
It’s really a fun experience, but I think the classes need tweaking, and there should be some thought put in to grief-proofing the game.

hatmoose: The first thing you do is turn off your caps lock. IT IS VERY ANNOYING WHEN PEOPLE USE ALL CAPS. Second, you need to find another computer, or solve it yourself. As far as we can tell, that particular crash is caused by an unknown bug in the XNA Framework, which the XNA team is having a very hard time fixing. Sorry.
WhiskeyNinja: I have seen maps where one team has dug a wide hole, preventing the other team from crossing. Then they filled the bottom with shock blocks. Then they covered the top with the other team’s color of force field. This allowed the creating team to walk across unharmed, but dropped the other tem into the pungee pit.
And even if you don’t do this, you’d be surprised how easy it can be to zap someone or blow them up.
Also, I have been able to surround the other team’s base with shock blocks, then gone hunting. If they aren’t smart enough to deposit some ore early on, or they don’t build a bank somewhere else on the map, then once they respawn, they are stuck inside their base with no way out, and with one ore to let them blast away the shock blocks or build their way out.
Plus, there is now a map editing program. It is still in development, and is not full-featured, and may be buggy, but it’s there. If you want to get it, go to http://code.google.com/p/infinimeditor. If you find any bugs, please tell the developer about them by submitting an issue at that website.

A few suggestions, if this is the place for them:
    – Currently digging ore/gold/diamond when you’re “full” will basically waste that tile. Make an item drop in that tile which can be picked up for later recovery (by anyone!) instead.
    – Water! Less-lethal lava that’s slightly transparent that slows down movement, pressing jump lets you climb it like a ladder. Possible drowning, and maybe even moves through dirt (unlike lava) stopped only by stone!
    – An “equipment” dispenser the engineer can build, to get things like jetpacks, breathing tanks, lava-resistance suits, etc with ore.
    – Tile full of spikes, buildable by engineer, makes every fall into that tile a lethal one.

@harkejuice: I think that problem appears when the XNA framework tries to playback the theme song (which is encoded using the latest Windows Media codecs). If you have those codecs missing (Windows Performance Edition or any other customized Windows) you will have to get them before playing. Try installing Windows Media Player 11. You can also try with Media Player 10 or 9, or some codec pack… I don’t know which is the exact codec you need, but I swear I solved this problem by installing tons of them (specifically for wma, that is).

k7991: I don’t disagree with you completely; I think it’s silly to let something like that happen to one’s own base.
However, when the countermeasures consist of building your own bank block fortress so the enemy can’t, your limited in what you can do. My friend did this bank-block wall-in on the enemy fort 3 games in a row, until all 5 members of the opposing team were trying to do nothing but stop him. Here’s where the issue I have with your argument comes in: They couldn’t stop him. There are too many ways to get to the enemy base and throw down bank blocks before they can stop you. They tried building normal blocks, and my friend just brought a sapper along. They tried making traps, and my friend just build a huge tower and jump-padded over them. They tried making their own bank blocks, but whenever they deleted one to leave, my friend would be there to fill in the hole with one they couldn’t get rid of.
I do not condone such gameplay myself, but it’s a good example of the fact that it doesn’t matter whether the enemy team notices what you’re doing or not; you can make it happen anyway.

A ‘kick’ command would be good indeed, though I think some slight gameplay alterations would help too; as long as these kinds of sandbox games exist, people are going to exploit any openings they can find, and arguably, I can’t really blame the people for doing that kind of thing in a game with so few rules.
If everyone is just going to kick people that do things outside of some sort of ‘house rules’ format, I think a change in the way the game works is a better solution.

There’s not even many changes I want to make for myself, just to convert it into a mining ore/building game. Hell, if my decompile could compile I have all the variable changes sitting here.

After playing for quite a few days since version 1.0, I have a few comments on version 1.3/1.31, if you don’t mind reading them.
Why did you get rid of bases? I enjoyed the thrill of having to not only make it back to the surface, but make it to the base too. Other players digging out bases only made it more challenging to return, and more rewarding. Simply getting back to the surface is too easy. The only thing that was a problem was trapping in players using bank blocks. The simple solution is to make bank blocks destructible.
I somewhat understand the nurf on shock blocks, but why only the bottom? The bottom is nearly impossible to get people to accidentally bump into, and is almost useless. At least make the top kill as well. The sides can stay safe, I don’t care.
One final thing which I consider more important than the rest of it. Please fix the ‘spawning from the sky’ feature. When you really get into a game, a lot of the surface is going to be dug out. Half of the time when I spawn I die because I’ve fallen too far and I have no ore to make blocks to save myself.

I also miss the bases. I only played one evening before they were gone, but I enjoyed knowing where I was when I spawned. I made it more of a team feeling. Also the sky spawning is just really annoying, and can ruin possibly fun games like when there are only a few islands in an ocean of lava.

I, again, like it better with no bases. Makes it more freeform. The main complaint seems to be the sky spawning. If instead of spawning on the sky, you spawned on the highest ground directly below where you’d normally spawn, I think that’d be a big improvement. Also, it’d be nice if it checked for lava directly below, and didn’t let you spawn there.

Sometimes, the game will delay for 1~2 second after the input. Everything is working fine, the frame rate is steady and you can see the ‘cloud’ moving. But when I move my mouse or stroke my keyboard, it takes 1~2 second before the character in the game starts to move.

As the bases comments go, and the engineer building spawn points suggestions, gow about if for a relatively high ore price an engineer can place a Base/secondary base wherever he wants with a 3 base limit?
The block it’s the same used as a base in 1.21 with the steel floor and all, and can be removed only by friendly engineers if the bases are not close enough or useless
That way the base building is there and the spawn points can be closer to the action, in underground tunnels or structures to get the mining operation going

Doc and the other Doc: Your graphics cards may be using outdated drivers, or they may simply be too old to work with this game. They need to support pixel and vertex shading to work with this game. All of the newer cards support this.

Extremely fun game, i just tried it out yesterday and showed it one of my friends today. Even if we were playing on one team, the teamworking and mining together is really funny. I would love to see a few things for future updates:
    1. Be able to start a server with a saved map or with parameters, for example by using the number of an algorithm given with a maps creation to feed the server instead of letting him create a random. This would make races against the clock for two different teams possible without the need to join the same game.
    2. Something to change the sound volume ingame
    3. To be able to specify own ports to run the game with (would require adding :port to direct connect, if it isn’t already provided)
Otherwise total fun and a real change from the usual LAN games.

  272. May 11, 2009 at 3:17 pm | Permalink

    Standing issues —
You can join with the name of another player. I suggest you be able to change your handle at game startup. I’d also like if you, as a player, could register your name with someone’s server, quickly and easily, simply to protect your name from being used. This would be optional. Players doing this would simply enjoy its benefit.
This could be used with some sort of stat tracking later. Maybe.
As admin, I’d like a password lock for the game I’m running. We shouldn’t have to be so reliant on Hamachi for security.
I’d also like the map load command to restart the server automatically. Currently, I have to type “restart” and then “load epiclavaflow2” very fast before people connect.
My players are antsy little buggers. >.>
Server admins need to be able to see IP addresses next to player names, or after using the Players command.
The kick command is entirely useless if players can simply come right back in (and with another player’s name of all things).
That said, we need to be able to ban IPs from the game.
That’s all for now. I suggest this ’cause some of my guys are getting annoyed.
But mostly it’s pretty damn fun. I love zipping all over the place on roads.
    Wheeeeeeeeeee.

I had five of me in the game.
    http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q169/Celdur/gayasstus.jpg
While hilarious, a bit of an issue if someone decides to abuse it.
You know how a game gets unstable the more players it gets?
    Well, imagine getting playerflooded.
Limit the app so only one Infiniminer game can run at a time, and limit connections to one per IP. I guess.
    Heh.

    Suggestions:
    * Building: Make it so enemy team’s can’t build blocks within a 1-square radius of your blocks. + Enemy can’t block ladders, or the tops of jump-boxes.
+ Bridges made of enemy-passable boxes can’t be made useless by building over/under.
+ Enemy can’t build blocks within player “bases”, making them almost indestructible.
    – Enemy can still wall off jump-blocks with near-by dirt, but this is situational.
    – “Bases” are indestructible with no dirt around to lay TNT boxes, making sappers less useful in a way. Although, it’s not really necessary for enemies to break inside player bases.
    * Constructors: Replace roadblocks with a single (expensive) block that gives a temporary speed boost speed when stepped on.
    + Makes pathway-building less tedious.
+ Allows players to make longer jumps, which adds a benefit to jump-block.
+ Easier to defend / enemy-proof (add one anti-enemy block on top).

As people distroy more and more of the top layer, the chance of dying during spawn gets a lot higher. In fact, if people decide to destroy all the top layers (will take 10~20 min) everyone will die everytime when they spawn.

    Idea for game mode:
First, digging mode. Somehow limit sapping in this mode. You build and dig as normal. After a pre-determined time, the game changes. Everyone changes from diggers to gunners. Very simple gunners, no different weapons or classes I reckon. I couple of pew pews kills someone, you respawn pretty fast. Objective: Steal opposing teams flag, which is placed inside their base. First to a pre-determined number of captures. Could bring some spirited playful fun.

Hey, i couldnt find the “Ideas section” so, i thought id post a few here.
    1. ALOT of players love to build houses in sandbox. so maybe add furniture so houses dont look so empty.
    2. Add smaller scale bricks, such as, 4 small bricks make a normal brick. This should help players make more advanced buidings and such.
    3. Make all differant colour blocks, I know this wont fit into the construction gun, but maybe you could add a new class, called the Decorator or something.
    4. Alot of players are comming into games with the name “Player” Simply because they are new, and dont know how to change their name. It’s not very practical to have to change your name in the config files as alot of players wouldnt think to look in them. So maybe add a name changing system in the client it’s self.
    5. ALOT of online games where you interact with other players, have a friends system, I’ve seen alot of players greet eachother and turns out they know eachother. It would make this game even more enjoyable if players could add their friends onto a friends list so they could whisper eachother in game or something.
I know it would take some work to add all this stuff, but as i said. They are just ideas that i think would make the game even better than it already is! 😀

You need to forward TCP port 5565 and UDP port 5565 thru your router. If you don’t know how to do that, go to http://portforward.com . You will also need to allow your server to get thru your computer’s firewall.

If you don’t want to deal with this, you can always try Hamachi, but be warned: for anyone to connect, they will need Hamachi also, and there’s more people that can forward ports than there are that use Hamachi.

You need to forward TCP port 5565 and UDP port 5565 thru your router. If you don’t know how to do that, go to portfoward(dot)com. You will also need to allow your server to get thru your computer’s firewall.

I don’t think it’s getting stuck; it sounds like there are no servers for you to join, which is not all that uncommon for vanilla Infiniminer. Try running the InfiniminerServer.exe first, then running Infiniminer.exe after the server says it’s ready.

Also, you should head over to the forums and get the latest P2 alpha. It has a lot more stuff in it, and it actually has support (sort of). I’d put in a link to the correct thread, but that would flag the comment for moderation, which would mean you wouldn’t see it.

First off, next time you ask questions, please make an effort to spell better. It makes it much easier to figure out what you are asking.
As far as you being unable to join servers, that is the fault of that server’s owner. To allow other people to access your server you need to do some stuff to your router and to your computer’s firewall. It sounds like whoever owns that server hasn’t done that. I would recommend that you go over to the forums and find and download Infiniminer P2 (means Protocol 2). It has bigger maps, WAY better support, and it’s actually still in development. The current download is the surprisingly stable (and quite popular) Alpha2 release.

Edit the client.config file and change the width and height options to match your screen resolution. Also, there is a fullscreen option in there so you can turn that on and off. 🙂

Also, a tip: while you’re in there, make sure the name is something unique (as in, not “player”). Some server sdmins have simply banned the name “player”, which means that anyone using that name is banned until they change it. Unfortunately, there is no way to simply say “change your name. then you can join”.

Well, if you don’t save the file, the changes you made will be lost.

  364. compsciguy's Gravatar compsciguy

If the server list is empty, then either: (1.) you aren’t connected to the internet, OR (2.) there are no servers online at the moment.

The map loading screen is stuck at 00% because your friend hasn’t properly forwarded TCP and UDP ports 5565.

If you are itching to play with other people, I recommend that you go to the forums and download Infiniminer P2. It has lots more features (including larger maps!) and quite a few bug fixes as well. It even has a NAT-Punchthrough feature that will auto-forward the ports for you (if your router is UPnP-enabled anyway).

  367. compsciguy's Gravatar compsciguy
    May 30, 2010 at 2:33 pm | Permalink

Sorry, should have made that clearer.

If you want to play on a server that is NOT on your local network (meaning somewhere ELSE on the internet), then the server host must forward their ports.

If you want to play on a server that IS on your local network, then you need to choose the “LAN Server” option from the list. Choosing the actual name of the server, when the server is on your local network, does not allow you to connect. Most of you probably won’t have this problem, but if you run two servers on the same computer (not network), you can only connect to one of them while on the same network as the hosting computer.

Umm…my server page is still blank and i’m on the internet…I REALLY WANA TRY INFINIMINER!!!!!!!!!

  369. May 30, 2010 at 8:54 pm | Permalink

Like I said before, that means that there simply aren’t any servers online right now, at least for what is now called “vanilla” Infiniminer. Vanilla is the straight-up v1.5 that was released by Zach just before he made it open source. Since then, there have been numerous mods made by the community.

The most popular, and most supported, is Infiniminer P2. It stands for Protocol 2, since the server/client communication protocol is totally different, though the client can still connect to older servers. It has bigger maps, numerous bug fixes, changeable block textures, and all kinds of stuff I can’t list because there’s just TOO MUCH!

I’m not able to post an easily-seen link without sending my post to a moderation queue, so click my website link on this post. It links to the forum thread where you can download P2. While you’re there, register on the forums! Its free, and there’s lots more people to help you if/when you have a problem! And you can post links without your post getting moderated! 😀

termonator: You need to be using the right version of the game, as there are A LOT of mods, and pretty much all of them are incompatible with each other. Any server with the [IF] prefix requires you to have the InfiniFortress mod (available on the forums), P2 servers require the P2 client, etc.

A friend just told me about this and I`ve been playing quite a bit, it`s lots of fun, but there`s two problems.

    1. Whenever I try to join the other server that I can see from within infiniminer I CTD and I get an error prompt, the first line says “Index was outside the bounds of the array“`and then there`s a bunch of computer looking code, it talks a lot about strings and threads. Is there something I`m doing wrong?

    2. My 6 year old backup PC can`t run this at all, it says it can`t detect a graphics card, and refuses to launch. The PC does have one, but it`s integrated into the motherboard. Is there a fix for this one too?

It appears that you may have a bad stick of RAM in your computer, or else your graphics card is either dying or not supported.

Either way, sorry, but for now, you can’t play with that computer.

However, if you have access to another computer, even a library computer, you can play off that one, since the installer is really just a pretty-fied file copier. Just load the whole thing on a thumb drive, copy it to the desktop of the computer you want to play on, and maybe delete it once you’re done playing.

Troll, if you even looked at the creation date of either game or did you’re research on the About page of Minecraft, you would notice that NOTCH stole this game and made it better.
    So yah, great job nub.

Well, notch may or may not have made the sandbox mode “better” (since that’s a rather subjective view), but he completely removed the competitive portion of the game, so overall, I think Infiniminer is better.

    Also, open-source ftw!

Who said he stole the source? Infiniminer is written in C#, using the XNA Framework. As far as I know, Minecraft was written in Java.

Yo, Notch likes the idea of Infiniminer, and decided to build a separate, unique game off of its concept. That should be a complement, not thievery…

We’re not actually sure what is causing that error, but there are a couple of much newer versions (super-mods) released now that Infiniminer is open-source. Just go to the forums (forums[dot]zachtronicsindustries[dot]com) and look in the Games > Infiniminer subforum. There should be a couple of sticky threads there with the download links.

  402. compsciguy's Gravatar compsciguy
    September 5, 2010 at 10:38 pm | Permalink

All you need to do to run your own server is run the InfiniminerServer.exe file that is in the same folder as the Infiniminer.exe file. You can find out about all the commands by typing the word “help” (without the quotes) into the prompt that comes up when you run the server.

Also, Zach can’t reboot the servers; he doesn’t control any of them.

And if you decide to host a public server, please make sure you have properly forwarded TCP port 5565 and UDP port 5565. I’ll leave it to you to figure out how to do that, since it’s different with every router.

Heya guys, I saw this game and wanted to try it out.

I have issues connecting to other servers, so I start my own in join it.

I have a problem though. After I select my class, I get an error.

“Both a valid vertex shader and pixel shader (or valid effect) must be set on the device before any draw operations may be performed.”

After that it’s a bunch of XNA mumbo jumbo.

    Any help?

@Disturbed: If all you see is a black screen (as in no text or picture) when you launch the game, you are having problems. The server list automatically loads as soon as you get past the title screen.

@Help?: The issues you are having connecting to other servers are the faults of the people running those servers. They have failed to forward the necessary ports through their firewall and router, effectively blocking the server from even hearing the clients attempting to connect to it.
And as for your pixel shader issues, Infiniminer requires that your graphics card support Pixel Shader v2.0. Sorry to tell you this, but you need to upgrade your graphics card if you want to play. 🙁

@Kastox: If you have a recent version of Windows, you should be able to play it. The only reason you would need WiMP is if you have codec problems. However, I would recommend that you go over to the forums (forums [dot] zachtronicsindustries [dot] com) and get Infiniminer P2 instead. It’s a newer version that was released by a player after the game went open-source. It has a HUGE number of bugfixes and other features. The latest version is Alpha 3, but it’s pretty stable for an alpha.

@pizza: You open the folder where you installed the game to and edit the client.config file so your name is displayed correctly in the game. Otherwise, you go running around as “Player” and you look like a noob. Once you save the file, double-click “Infiniminer.exe” (may be called “Infiniminer”).

Hey, this game is fantastic, I was actually led to it after playing Minecraft. I wanted to create a game like minecraft for my computer sciences final project, and when I learned this was his inspiration I had to try it out. This is what I imagined that my game would be kinda like. I guess what I’m asking is if I can use this idea like Minecraft did? (I as well will be making an XNA version of it, but I will be using different ideas).

JKPhantom: Sorry, but no. All versions of Infiniminer (including fan-made versions; it IS open-source) require the .NET and XNA Frameworks.

mirhagk: Well, Notch didn’t ask Zach for permission (as far as I know), so I think it’s probably fine. However, I think I’ll let Zach say for sure 😛

just an fyi, to those saying Notch “stole” the code, this open source project that uses the MIT license, therefore, Notch could technically have copied any code he wanted (not to mention legally sell it, read the MIT license). the only clincher here with MIT is that the original copyright to the code, that of Zach would have to be placed somewhere (EULA or something similar) in Notch’s program.

of course this is all moot because Minecraft is java based and not C#.

@Sean: The game is working fine. You can’t get into those servers because the people hosting them didn’t RTFM and decided to set public=true in the server.config without forwarding their ports correctly. You can either keep searching for a server you can actually get to, or you can host your own. You can keep it private (your local LAN only) or make it public (but make SURE to forward your ports, please!).

@Someone: Yeah, that’s Vista and Win7 being picky about not writing to files that are in Program Files. The game was written on XP, where it’s okay to just write to Program Files whenever you feel like it. You can either just deal with it the way you did, or you can keep the game in a folder somewhere else, like your desktop or in My Documents.

To those who are saying, “Oh, Minecraft is better than this”: I think you’re being horrendously unfair. I don’t think it was ever Zach’s intention to make a game on the level of scale and complexity that Minecraft has become. Maybe if that had been the case, your criticisms would be of more merit.

Seems to me that Infiniminer does what Zach set out to do, and it does it very well.

And at least Notch had the decency to credit Zach for the inspiration.
