Re: Design a Game for Engineers

It’s been nearly a month since the end of the Design a Game for Engineers challenge and I haven’t said anything about it – what’s up with that?!

I received a total of 12 submissions, all of which were more or less decent ideas. Some stood above others in terms of whether or not they seemed like tenable projects, and a surprisingly large amount were similar to ideas I’ve thrown around in the past, such as traffic intersections, cellular biology, robots, and Pulse-like shooters.

For a while I had a side project going on that would have led to making some of these games, but we stopped when it was determined to be a stupid idea. I may contact some of you in the future, however, to see if you would like to collaborate should an opportunity arise.

To me, it sounds like he was going to end up making one or more, but now that’s on hold. Sometime in the future, those of you who submitted ideas may or may not be contacted to help with making your idea into a game. Is that right, Zach?

That’s what it sounds/looks like to me, my idea was a bit far fetched anyways.

I was thinking making wood-mechanical river crossing apparatuses by self-carving gears and blocks of wood.
    What did you all submit?

I came up with a game called NanoBotica, it was about robots. then you had to build and program a robot. but I think it became to complex to make it.
any more want to share their submittion?

I found this site just a short while after the deadline for the contest so I couldn’t have submitted my idea. I have seen and played a few of Zach’s games and thought of a game somewhat based off of some of them. It’s about engineering and creating weapons, vehicles and devices for a post-modern war faction. (Think final fantasy) You use electricity, energy and magic to create these weapons. It will use an interface similar to Silicon Foundry and a little bit of Alchemical Engineering. That’s all that I’ve come up with so far, no storyline yet.

I had a partial idea thats something similar to both World Of Goo and the Bridge Builder games, but the actual idea didn’t work in practice so I left it. Oh well.

Wow Mokshu, that’s got a lot of depth. Nice diagrams as well. In my opinion, the programming of the robot to travel a course or loop seems too complex. Why not give the player control or some kind of AI (artificial intelligence)? I think that would make it more interesting. Just a thought. Also, good job on the presentation.

Now that I think about it, my idea I posted seems to have some similarities to Ruckingenur as far as the military weapons and devices. Although, it won’t revolve around anything cryptic and the game is to create these things and not analyze or “hack” them.

My Idea hadn’t to do with anything Zach did before, but was not an Engineering game at all.
So… maybe he’ll try out a new ‘Brand’ some Time, but I doubt it will be my Idea.

The Surface Mechanic would have been similar to a Trading Card Game like Magic: The Gathering (but in Sci-Fi).
The Idea wasn’t thought out well compared to Mokshu’s, so I wouldn’t mind if Zach did send it straight to the Trashcan.

You know, I must have overlooked World War Awesome, because that is quite similar to what I submitted. :/ (I do think it’d make a better side scrolling shooter thought. 😉 )
