Infiniminer v1.5

Infiniminer v1.5 is now out, available here.

  • There is now a server browser! To make your server public, MAKE SURE THAT PORT 5565 UDP IS ACCESSIBLE OUTSIDE YOUR NETWORK and then set the public flag in the server config to true. Junk servers WILL be blacklisted.
  • Made kick command IP based, added a ban command with a banlist stored in banlist.txt.
  • A random hint will display for your edutainment as you connect to a server.
  • Fixed the beacon bug, where beacon info wasn’t sent to players joining later in the game.
  • The red/blue colors for text are now easier to read.
  • Added a sexy new title screen.
  • Added a North mark on the radar screen.
  • You can now connect to host names, in addition to using Ctrl-V to paste an IP/hostname into the direct connect field.
  • You can now use the numpad!
  • Fixed some random crashes.
  • Gold veins are now bigger and thicker, but gold is only worth $100 per block.
  • Miners now carry 8 loot, everyone else carries 4.
  • All classes can dig by holding down the mouse button, but miners still dig much faster.
  • TNT now blows up other blocks of TNT, regardless of who owns them.
  • There is now a sandbox mode that can be enabled for the server, giving free blocks and no win condition.
  • There is now a work-around for the AllocateFormatAndData, the nosound flag in the client config.
  • Bloom lighting makes everything prettier! Lava textures are animated now too!

This is probably the last major update for Infiniminer.

It’s a shame actual shadows and stuff would likely be nearly impossible to do, given the terrain, and how many possible light sources there could be… Eh, maybe just simulated, or something. Like, brighten the screen a bit when looking at lava or the sky, darken it some when not. Alas, these are but the ramblings of a crazy person.

Very nice. But when are we going to get a patch that lets Engineers delete road blocks? It’s so frustrating when you’re trying to build a road to zip around the surface on and a bunch of misclicked blocks are in your way.

that’s sad. the game could still use a lot of work
-ladders shouldn’t require the player to be moving up them in order to work(stop moving and you fall)
-it seems like the ore rocks cause more system side lag than normal rocks(dirt)
-there should be more server side settings(how flat the surface terrain is for instance)
-spawn points should be no more than one or two squares above a cube, not above lava.

Sandbox mode will truly be amazing. The only suggestion I would have is adding a "Server Title" variable to the server config, so players know what they are getting into by joining a public server.
Honestly, this is a brilliant game. You’ve brought great times to many people. With that in mind, if you find yourself on another project, I would agree with the notion of making it open source. This game is becoming amazingly good, and I’m sure that if you don’t have the time (you’ve done enough by just yourself!), there will be a very thankful community waiting to take the helm. (I know ours would be very interested!)

Hey, loving the game, just a few bugs ive found:
-If you walk directly into a corner of 2 blocks high, you can see through them.
When doing this, if you jump – you can clip through all of the blocks ingame, so if youre at the bottom you can ‘fly’ to the top through the rest of the cave untill you reach the surface.
-Server saving, me and a friend were messing around ingame for like 3 hours, then decided to save the map so we could play it the next day, and the server application crashed. If it could be possible, could you implement auto-saving, like every 30mins? Cheers.
and a few suggestions ive got:
-Water: same moving ability as lava, but like you can swim up or down through it, but it slowly does damage to you.
-Extra colours to blocks? (i know its based around the two colours, but it’d be cool to have some other colours :P)
    -Furniture? :3
-Moving floors: you stand on them, and they push you in the direction they are supposed to, like a conveyorbelt.
-Let us have the ability to mod some of the graphics? Itd be cool to have custom skins made by the community going around :3 cant edit .xnb files. Or even let us have the ability to add in extra graphics like blocks or something, server side.
-Very basic guns? like hand guns, or even like a pushgun or something. Or a crowbar/bat.
-New game modes? like capture the flag, or taking a bomb to their base etc.
-scriptable blocks? for like doors, or something.
-Starting ore (when you spawn, how much you have, would be cool in sandbox mode if u spawned with like 100 or 300 or something.)
-Moving monsters underground that run around and try to kill you.
very difficult: create a sun, and cast shadows off of the mountain blocks, and have underground really dark. If you did this, it would be cool to have light blocks and power generator blocks (that used ore per second or something)
cheers for reading, and keep up with the good work :3

    Oh, lastly:
-In server config, it would be cool to set how much lava is inmap, and the dimentions of the map.
-In server config an option to make the surface mountainous, or flat.
    cheers

    Suggestion:
could you make a spawn point block maybe? that would be cool.
If not, could you limit how high it spawns you up? cause ive died many times from falling when spawning.
Could you nerf the requirement where you have to be on the surface to change class? like make it 5 blocks instead of being on the surface, as its annoying if you are only 3 blocks below the surface and you have to jump up to do so.
If you mash esc+k many times, you can fill the server log with you killing yourself, can you like put a time limit on this command? so that they cant spam servers to cause lag. thanks.

Also, I’d like to add myself to the list of people who think that there need to be more options in the config files.
While sandbox mode is nice, part of the fun of it was having to find the ore to let you continue building… I’m not sure how that could be resolved though. Maybe just make everything cost 5-15 in sandbox mode? Or add more config options, like people keep asking for every version (I guess you’re probably getting tired of it =P)

Thank you so much for disable sound option. I am finally able to play this game! It is a lot of fun. Thanks again for your time.
I don’t know if you plan on updating again, but let me leave this here in case you do:
I find that my client often thinks that a block exists even though it does not.
Other players are running through the block, but I cannot. I cannot even mine the block. I am not sure what would happen if lava would fall on that block.
Obviously my client missed a packet somewhere or something. That’s ok. I’m guessing that that is going to happen no matter what.
But in the next version, perhaps the server can help my client out when this happens.
    For example:
I click on a block to mine it. I send a request to the server to let me mine the block.
The server receives my request, but the server knows that that block does not even exist. So the server sends my client a message telling it to remove the block because it is not supposed to exist on my client machine.
The client receives the message to remove the block and does so. My client machine should not attempt to harvest money or ore from the block, though.
You may have to do this for every block type (even the ones that you cannot mine?). I think I’ve seen it happen to TNT blocks too. I’ve definitely seen many dirt blocks like this. I’ve even seen a diamond block like this (lol, I’m just mad that I couldn’t get the diamond… =P).
But that seems to be the least bandwidth intensive solution to this.
    Anyway, thanks again.
Hope you make billions off of it some day.

Also, just dropping some stack traces here. Don’t worry about them too much. My machine has only crashed like 3 times and I’ve been playing all evening/night. The game seems stable enough to me.
One time I fell into the side of a lavafall and the game crashed with this message:
    http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/4350/fellintoalavafall.jpg
At the end of a couple games, my game crashed with this message:
    http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/9224/ongameend.jpg
But I have played several games that did not end with my client crashing. So I wouldn’t worry about it.
By the way, after a game ends the normal client behavior is to return to the server list, right? My game always goes back to the server list after a game ends.
Thanks thanks thanks. I would not focus on these exceptions too much. It seems very stable to me. Just hold on to these if you are going to try to put it onto xbox or something.
    Hope you make billions!

Interesting. I seem to have found some sort of bug.
Basically, when I try and host a public server, it invariably crashes, giving me the following error:
“The given key was not present in the dictionary.

    at System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary`2.get_Item(TKey key)

Just because I’ve literally been up all night playing this game in one form or another, here’s another random suggestion: Making lava being destroyable a server variable, in case someone wants to make a server or map where sappers can’t just blow up all the lava.
Also, other types of traps. Random examples would be something like a spike trap, disappearing floor trap, exploding trap (would look very similar if not exactly like dirt and/or ore, but when dug, would explode like TNT), stuff like that.
Course, I’m only thinking about traps at the moment, as I’m attempting to create a cube. As in, from the movie Cube. 10x10x10. 1000 rooms. This may take a while.

Ricky: Your water damage idea won’t work because Infiniminer doesn’t have a health system. It just figures out how far you fell, and if you fell at least 14 blocks, it kills you.
Anonymous: Type “help” at the server console to display the command list.
Joel: Yes, the client should go back to the server list when a game is over. At the end of a game, the server waits 10 seconds, then disconnects everyone and generates a new map. It essentially issues the “restart” command to itself.

You serious? Miners + prospector team is straight up win right now. They can hold double the amount of gold as everyone else and they can staircase like nobody’s business. The miner is absolutely fine.
The engineer, on the other hand, yeah, pretty worthless because the level generation doesn’t force you to make infrastructure. When everyone can staircase straight up from where they found gold, why take the time, effort, and ore to build a better way up? Plus, anything they do actually get built is too easy destroyed by a single TNT.

  52. BetaSword's Gravatar BetaSword

“When everyone can staircase straight up from where they found gold, why take the time, effort, and ore to build a better way up?”
The faster you can get to the surface, the less chance the other team will steal your mining spot. Also, its hard to prevent an opposing team from using your staircases (or ladders), but it’s easy to just put an anti-enemy block on a jump block.
“Plus, anything they do actually get built is too easy destroyed by a single TNT.”
TNT takes 100 ore compared to a jump box’s 25 ore, so they’re easy to replace. Also, the Engineer is likely to stay close to the loot to replace blown structures… Unless he get’s caught in the blast 😛

What you did with the last updates, making looting slower and more spread out was brilliant and I think you shold go even further on this.
that would give us more time for building and hence strengthen the engineer. another way would be to make the maps bigger and put slightly less bubbles in there.
Again: we dont really know whats best for the game just as little as you do. make it customizable and the fittest shall survive.
Another idea: a transport system. for blocks make panels and pipes. if you put ( yes one would have to be able to pick up and put down blocks ) something on a panel, that is connected to a pipe, wich is again connected to another panel, said something will reappear on the other panel. the time it takes could easily be calculated over the lengh of the pipe.

I really wish you guys would revert the shock block to the way it was. It’s the only block not worth making right now. I mean really, it’s worthless. It had a lot of cool uses before, but now? Make it more expensive if you have to, but you should really revert it back.

I don’t agree with a lot of these suggestions, and I agree with others, but I know that they would mess up gameplay or be really hard to implement. But I have to agree with Jigs: I don’t see the point to a shock block that only zaps underneath. It should zap on all sides. Now that there are no bases, it’s totally impossible to barricade someone inside their base, because it doesn’t exist, and the barricades were the main complaint about shock blocks.

Personally, I think a server should have the option of turning Sappers/TNT off. Griefers are using TNT in sandbox mode to mess everything up, and it’s hard to determine who the cause of the destruction so as to ban/kick them. I’ve seen them destroy an entire map causing it to be virtually unplayable.
    So please, do something.

Head over to the forums to get some help. It’s kind of hard to troubleshoot through the comments.

Wow this game is great o_o! But i found a little glitch in it. You know that when you are dead there is a black screen telling what to do, but there is a way to remove the black screen. I think it happens if someone blows up the place you are while dead because when it disappeared i was in a bang from an TNT. Anyway while this was gone i found myself stuck up in the air near the southwest corner. you can still look around but you cant move. None of the other players could see me and i saw that my X on the radar was gone. You can still change tools see players and all the other stuff you can do but when you click the mouse button, (like the black screen says), you will be teleported to a random spot in air and you will drop naturally. Its a kind of cool glitch but still it needs to be fixed.

And by the way? Could you make some sort of SuperSandbox mode where all classes could build everything including blocks that normally cant be build like dirt lava stone steel diamonds and so on?

If you cant edit the config file, it’s most likely that your running vista and you don’t have the file permissions. The easiest way to get it done is to drag the file to the desktop, modify it there, since you have permission to save to the desktop, then drag it back.

Dvorak: In case you hadn’t noticed, Infiniminer was made open-source quite a while ago. There are several new versions out (server and client), and some of them support key-mapping. You can head over to the forums to find some threads about the various versions, or get the latest official version over at the github.

I was wondering why it’s saying Error 500 on the webpage when i go to the download page, especially when it didn’t say that a few days ago when i couldn’t download it for “unmentionable reasons.”

I’m not sure why, but I’ve gotten that error a couple times when trying to view the Infiniminer post on here. Server overload maybe?
